It feels like there has been no real change in the phone industry when it comes to design. Every phone looks like an iPhone or a Samsung phone. The Edge series has changed the display by getting rid of the side bezels, but with a case, it is still hard to tell which phones are which nowadays. Internally every phone has met the highest spec, making batteries last a full day and processors are almost flawless. But the one home button, one power, 2 volume buttons and a “fingerprint magnet” design just seemed to never end.
For a good moment, it seemed like the industries had reached their stopping point when it comes to looks. But then the Mi Mix came around, and people cannot express enough how happy they are about the new design. The Mi Mix is sold in a limited quantity and only in China, but its a start and it proves that people are ready to move forward with the design. After the Mi Mix was seen, rumors started with how Apple and Samsung will finally redesign their phone for their next releases. The new design consist of the front of the phone consisting mostly of glass, the Mi Mix has a ~83.6% screen-to-body ratio (not 91% like they claimed.)
The glass design is great and gives the smartphone a futuristic look. Although this makes the phone extremely fragile, it seems like people do mind taking extra care of the phone for the good looks.
The best news so far is that Huawei might make their version of the Mi Mix design. Weibo post reveals that what is being worked on is called the “Quad-Edge screen” which seems to be a bezel-less phone with curved screen. Huawei has taken rumors of Apple and Samsung before and implant them to their phones. When the iPhone was rumored to have 3D touch, Huawei quickly released their Mate S with 3D touch support. Hopefully Apple and Samsung can learn from Huawei and Mi Mix and release the perfect phone with 90% screen-to-body ratio.
Are you excited for the new Huawei?
