Huawei’s Honor brand has been teasing a new ground-breaking smartphone for a while now, and those teasers are now laid to rest as Honor made the phone official. It is called the Honor Magic, and it has some features that certainly separate it from the rest of the smartphone market.
To start off with some bad news, the Magic will only be available in China, from several retailers including Dmall.com, JD, Tmall and Suning. Pricing is still unknown, and it is unclear if Huawei will bring it into other markets.
Now that we got the bad news out of the way, here are the specifications of the Magic. For starters, we have a 5.09-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 250 x 1440, with a PPI count of 577. Powering the device is a 2.3GHz Octa-core Huawei Kirin 950 CPU with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. There is a 12MP dual-lens camera system on the rear with an aperture of f/2.2, and a front 8MP sensor with an aperture of f/2.0. There is a 2,900mAh non-removable battery on board as well. It is running Android 6.0 Marshmallow on top of Honors Magic Live skin.
Moving beyond the specifications of the device, there are a lot of useful features that make the device stand out. The first of which is called WiseScreen, which uses a sensor imbedded in the frame of the device as well as in infrared sensor in the front-facing camera to detect if the person holding the phone is the “owner” of the device. When the owner puts the phone on the table or puts it in their pocket, the phone will automatically turn off in one second.
Another feature is called FaceCode Intelligent Recognition. And what this does is for any notification that is received on the phone, it will only show the notification if it can identify pre-registered faces. This could be useful if you don’t want people you don’t know seeing your notifications.
Most of these features are AI driven via Honor Magic Live. Honor has released some more examples of what the AI technology can do.
– Imagine when you are chatting about movies with your friends on Wechat, Honor Magic will then be able to recommend the latest blockbusters for you.
– Imagine when you are on the road, Honor Magic automatically recognizes that you are driving and will prompt a reminder for you to switch the device to driving mode.
– DeepThink – Press and hold the home button and Honor Magic will offer multi-facet information based on the current webpage you visit.
– Once you use Honor Magic to order a cab, the driver’s license plate information will be shown on the display under locked screen mode.
– Once you arrive at the theater, Honor Magic will automatically display the ticket booking number.
– When you approach the parcel collection counter, Honor Magic will automatically display the tracking number.
Some AI features can also be activated at certain times as well. So for example, if you were to enter a dark room, the Magic can activate the flashlight feature to brighten the area.
Moving on from the AI driven features, it is worth talking about the design of the phone. As shown in the pictures, the phone has a curved back and front design, which can reflect bright, shining lights. Additionally, there are no back or overview buttons, the users will be able to touch, double tap or swipe on the home key to access those functions. This is to make the screen bigger than normal. There is a fingerprint sensor on the home button, as well.
Huawei has used a new “special graphite molecular structure” technology as well as a new charging circuit design applied to the phone’s battery so that it will take ten minutes to get up to a 40% battery charge, and 20 minutes to charge up to 70%. Finally, one of the rear dual-camera sensors will take a black and white image while the other will take a full-color one. This technique should offer more detail and more colorful pictures than just the standard setup.
The Honor Magic is shaping up to be an interesting phone, it’s just a shame that it’ll only be available in the Chinese market. What are your thoughts on the phone? use the comment section down below or any of our social media pages to tell us your thoughts.
