Dubai, the biggest city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is famous for their luxury hotels, big malls and other expensive things that lots of people want to visit. And this summer you can experience something very unusual if you visit Dubai, you will be able to see Dubai from the air while sitting in an autonomous one-person drone.
This was announced at the World Government Summit by Mattar al-Tayer, the executive director of Dubai’s Roads & Transport Authority (RTA). He didn’t say if you’ll be able to buy one of those drones or if you can hire them, but we will hopefully get more information about that soon. We also know that Dubai wants one-quarter of the transportation in UAE to be done via self-driving/flying vehicles by 2030.[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5Q2W0r5e-s]
RTA won’t make own drones for this project, instead, they’ll employ Ehang and use one of their drones. The drone is called the Ehang 184 and can lift a person that weighs 220 lbs (100kg) as well as a suitcase or bag. We saw the Ehang 184 for the first time at CES 2016, and after that, they were allowed to test the passenger drone in Nevada. The flying time is 30 minutes on one charge, so you’ll need to charge it pretty often. When you get in the drone you simply need choose one of the predetermined destination, then you’re ready to go.
