You might think that 3D printers are only used for creating small plastic objects, such as toys, small tools, phone cases etc, but you are wrong, the American company MIT has made a huge 3D printer that can print buildings.
The 3D printer that is used in this project is quite different from other printers that you’ve seen. A big robotic arm is spraying foam while it’s rotating, which results in circular walls made of many layers of hardened foam. There are also some sensors that can detect when the arm should be lifted higher up in the air. A structure that is 12 feet/3.6 meters tall and 50 feet/15.2 meters across was built in 14 hours which is pretty impressive. If you want to see this printer in action, you can take a look at the video here.
This system is also able to build walls with different thicknesses, depending on what the building will be used for. Foam is definitely not the best material to use for buildings, but this machine will hopefully be able to handle other materials in the future. This can even be sent to the moon or Mars to build houses, according to MIT.
In the future, all buildings might be built by robots instead of human workers. What do you think about that? Do you own a3D printer? Leave your comments below, and don’t forget to visit or website and social media often for the latest tech news!
