On paper, the Porsche Cayenne’s tow rating is essentially under 10,000 pounds – but that doesn’t stop the luxury SUV from earning a Guinness World Record.
The German car giant put their 2017 European version Cayenne S Diesel to use by getting it to tow an Air France Airbus A380, an aeroplane which is well-known for its double-decker body weighing at around 285 metric tons – approximately 628,000 pounds. This is 115 metric tons more than the weight that the previous world record holder had pulled.
Surprisingly, there weren’t any modifications made to Porsche’s Cayenne, all that was needed was a standard tow bar that was enhanced with a special towing attachment.
The 375 horsepower diesel engine managed to get the job done – a job that it wasn’t exactly built for, but Porsche seems to be happy with the idea in this one-off case. Porsche then repeated the tow with a Cayenne Turbo S, just to make sure there wasn’t any lucky fluke. It might drop jaws, but it is certainly something that a good majority of Porsche Cayenne owners should avoid doing, so don’t try this at home! But then again, where will you find a gigantic Aeroplane parked up at your home?
