Recent speculations expect that the successor of the Google Pixel and Pixel XL will feature its own system-on-a-chip, also known as SoC. This might happen because Google has hired a professional that has been helping Apple with their chipsets since 2009; Manu Gulati. We know that Google has hired Gulati because his LinkedIn profile is updated to “Leading SoC Architect at Google”.
Gulati has managed to be the inventor of 15 Apple related SoCs, which is confirmed by looking at the patents linked to him. He has also been working for AMD and Broadcom recently, so he is a very successful chip designer. We also need to keep in mind that he has been working in this industry for 27 years now.
We already knew that Google has been interested in developing their own chips for a pretty long time now, and they might be able to complete that task soon. A custom SoC will hopefully give Google’s upcoming devices a better integration and leverage in terms of machine learning competence.
