Nokia is back and looks better than ever, this new Nokia 8 will compete with the latest Samsung and Apple smartphones. The big question is, will they be able to compete from their first try at a big screen and dual-camera set-up? To find out we have to check out the new features it will have and how they will help Nokia be a step ahead of its competitors.
To begin with, let’s talk about the design, the screen size of this phone is fairly big compared to its past models but it is not as big as the PLUS editions of Samsung and Apple smartphones. It is measured at 5.3 which is 0.2inches smaller than the iPhone 7 Plus and 0.9inches smaller than the S8 Plus. Screen size does not tell us if the phone is “better” than its competitors since it differs from person to person. What does matter is the dual-camera set-up they have and how they will use it. Nokia went ahead and made both rear cameras 13-megapixels and as a bonus, the front camera is 13-megapixels as well. The selfie mode is a big step forward because not only is it 13mega-pixels but it also has optical image stabilization.
How are the speeds on this device? It comes with latest Snapdragon 835 processor and 4GB of Ram, with those specs the speed should be very similar to any other flagship device in the market. You should have no problems playing games, searching the web, or using social media apps. To keep the phone running all day, it comes with a 3,090mAh battery which is a pretty average amount for an Android phone.
What makes this smartphone competitive against other flagship devices? The rear cameras can be used as separate cameras, one camera shoots in color while the other takes the same shot in black and white. The two cameras will put the results together to give you the best picture possible. You can also use front and rear camera simultaneously and also go on Facebook, Twitter or YouTube live while you’re at it. It uses new technology that enables the LCD to have an always-on display. The phone comes in 4 different colors: polish blue, polish copper, tempered blue, and steel. Lastly, it uses a copper cooling pipe that runs from one end to the other end of the phone to keep it cool and away from over heating.
Will this phone be durable? Yes, the phone feels and looks premium it uses Gorilla Glass 5 to keep the glass safe. The back has a curved aluminum unibody that makes it easy to hold and very durable for accidental drops. The cameras do stand out from the thin body of 4.6mm top half and thicker 7.33mm bottom half.
Additional things to know about the Nokia 8 is that it comes with a headphone jack and also the LCD will run a 2K resolution. It will be priced at around $700, which might be good or bad depending on how well the phone runs in real life performance. What are the downsides? The phone is said to release in Europe sometime in September, but there are no signs of it coming to the US so far.
