Lets talk about the finger print scanner on smartphones, as we know most high-end smartphones have the home button on the front or the back of the phone. Sony is one of the few exceptions because their finger print reader is on the side, embedded with the power button. The big question now is, where do you put the finger print scanner if you are making a phone with an edge-to-edge display? Some phones are putting the button on the back of the phone while others prefer to get rid of it because it does not look good on the back of their device(s).
Samsung had to make a big decision this year with the S8 and the upcoming Note 8 since they are leading the market with the edge-to-edge display, they made a last minute decision to place the home button next to the camera and many people found this very odd. Samsung initially wanted to have an embedded finger print scanner under the glass but it seems like they were having issues, just as other phone manufacturers have as well. Having a finger print scanner embedded under the screen is new technology therefore high-end smartphones are not adapting to it yet.
When will we see embedded home buttons under the screen? According to some rumors, we will see it on Samsung Note 9, it looks like they are not rushing this which is great news because it is not important for companies like Apple and Samsung to be first but it is important for them to do it right. Apple is also rumored to skip this new technology with the upcoming iPhone and will use 3D face recognition technology to unlock.
