Londoners will unfortunately not be able to use Uber as part of their daily commute anymore since London’s transport regulator has rejected the company’s application to renew its operation license. The transport regulator said the company’s approach in reporting criminal offences was unsatisfactory and could harm public safety. Uber has till the 30th of September, which is the final day of its current license, to appeal the decision. Having some 3.5 million riders and 40,000 drivers in London, Uber’s main problem has been security. The company has failed to report people who were accused of sexual assault which allowed them to strike again.
Uber said that they were shocked at the time they received the letter and further claimed that it did not reflect their good relation with the police. The transport regulator stresses on the fact that London transport should remain safe for all users and that all requirements must be met.
However, on the other side of the coin, this creates a huge gap in unemployment of drivers and vehicle debts. This puts London at risk of every threat that comes with unemployment. This failure to renew might be contested since Uber is planning to fight it in court.
