Microsoft has released several smartphones over the past years, and all of them have been different. They looked different with a colourful and rectangular design, and they were running Microsoft’s own Windows Phone OS instead of the more popular operative systems like Android and iOS. It seems like none of these phones became popular enough because, as CNET reported first, the leader of Microsoft’s Windows section announced that Windows Phone is dead.

Microsoft won’t make any new Windows phone hardware or software, but they won’t leave consumers who already own one of their handsets. This means that users will still be able to receive security updates. This is according to Joe Belfiore’s Twitter account.

One of the biggest issues with Microsoft’s phones is the lack of apps. Many developers decide to not create applications for Windows Phone OS, simply because there aren’t many people using that OS. Belfiore said that they “tried VERY HARD” to improve the number of apps available, but it didn’t work.

As mentioned before, the user interface of Windows Phone is different from Android and iOS. For example, the user interface was made of squares instead of apps, like the UI of Windows 8 and 10 for PC. The whole concept is very interesting, but it didn’t get much attention from consumers.

As you might already know, Microsoft’s web browser Edge is coming to both iOS and Android. So they have given up the hope of Windows Phone, and are now developing apps for more well-known operative systems. What do you think about this? Let us know!
