Last years CES, or Consumer Electronics Show, marked a huge adaptation in the television industry when it comes to 4K and HDR enabled TVs. Now that the market is finally taking those devices mainstream, it is time to look at what is next for the television industry. Multimedia giant LG is now looking at ways to combine its OLED technology into 8K resolution screens, and is showing such a device at CES 2018. The display that the company is showcasing at the show is both the largest and highest-resolution OLED panel to date. However, those are the only specifications that are currently being displayed.
When looking at previous large OLED displays, the then record holder was capped at 77-inches, and only had a 4K resolution. That being said, 4K OLED televisions are currently being offered from a slew of manufacturers, such as LG, Sony, and Panasonic. However, those companies obtain their large OLED panels from LG Display.
Interestingly, Samsung has moved away from OLED technology to focus on QLED displays. That now makes LG Display as the sole large-size OLED display maker in the world. By the looks of it, LG is putting large parts of money down to make sure that it stays that way, as they have made huge investments in ramping up OLED production capacity, as well as moving towards mobile OLED panels, which are featured on smartphones.
