We’ve already seen Kohler integrate Alexa into their Konnect line of devices aimed towards the bathroom, and now Moen is doing the same thing with their U by Moen series. This time however, the company is also adding in Siri voice compatibility. With Alexa capability, users will have the option of telling the voice assistant to turn on the shower at a desired temperature or to a customized setting. Unfortunately, Siri compatibility will be coming later in the year.
A digital valve connects to the temperature control unit, shower heads, hand showers, body sprays and other fixtures, which allows for the voice control capability. The shower control pad can be used to adjust the temperature of the water, and to change presets, but the integration with Alexa makes the process a tad bit easier.
Interestingly, when you use Alexa or even the app to turn on the shower, it will run until the water gets to the desired temperature. Once its there, it will turn off until you step in the shower and manually press the button on the digital controller.
However, to get the water running can be complicated, as you have to tell Alexa to tell Moen to run the water, because of the third-party integration, which can seem pretty clunky and overcomplicated. There is no word yet as to what the Siri command will be. There are also custom presets, such as one for a morning shower, or post workout cooldown, for different water temperatures and shower head settings.
For safety reasons, the smart valve will only allow water temperatures between 60 and 120 degrees. Furthermore, up to four showers can be connected to the system at a time.
