The OnePlus 5 was released on the 11th of June 2017. It was a completely new design from previous models and featured a dual camera; a feature which has been the key selling point of the device. However, the OnePlus 5, did not release with all of its features. One of these features was face unlock. It was previously only available on the OnePlus 5T but due to popular demand it will now also be implemented into the OnePlus 5 via the new OxygenOS Open Beta 3
With such incredible technology, users are demanding for more secure methods of locking their phone, whilst also having aesthetically pleasing devices and much more. Alongside fingerprint scanners, new security technology in smartphones is Face Unlock. The technology in the OnePlus 5 uses only the front-facing camera and is therefore not as secure as Apple’s Face ID. Apple’s Face ID users a sensor to remember 3D features of your face and this is why Apple’s Face ID will work in the dark, whereas the OnePlus 5 & 5T’s face unlock will only work in medium to good lighting. To use this security feature, users are required to press the power button and point the camera at your face.
This new facial recognition technology has been designed to not be able to authenticate another face. However, the question still remains open, whether the recognition can be fooled by photographs. The new OxygenOS Open Beta 3, also comes with general bug fixes and 5G Wi-Fi connection fixes, alongside an updated security patch!
