Artificial intelligence is one of the biggest technology trends right now and we can almost find it everywhere, including, smartphones, smartwatches, fridges, and smart speakers. This has led to that one in six Americans have a smart speaker, according to a study by NPR and Edison Research. That’s approximately 16% of the US citizens in other words. This number is actually 128% higher than the result from last year. A lot of the devices were sold during Black Friday, 7% of the Americans bought a smart speaker between Black Friday (November 24th) and December 31st. The reports also claim that 4% of the American people bought their first smart speaker ever during that time period.

Amazon’s Echo speaker dominates the US market and about 11% of the people own one, while 4% own any kind of Google Home speaker. The main reason for this is probably the Home’s late arrival to the market compared to the Echo. It’s going to be interesting to see how these numbers change in the future.

The era of smart speakers actually impacts our living quite a lot. For example, 34% of the owners say that they use their smartphone less and 28% use their tablets less. People also seem to use their TV (30%) less often, PC (26%) and even printed word (23%). The study also showed that around 44% of the participants started to use the AI assistant on their phone more as well.

The study is based on a blind 1,010-people test and an 806-person test about the habits of the smart speaker users. This means that these numbers likely won’t apply to all Americans, but they sound really reasonable. What do you think about this study? Do you have any kind of smart speaker?
