Alongside popular Television manufactures integrating Alexa and Google Assistant into their TVs, TiVo, who makes DVRs, will also be adding the smart assistant capability. This would also mean that users who have a smartphone will be able to control the DVR without reaching for the remote. However, according to PCMag, the functionality will be dependent on the voice assistant of choice. Meaning, Alexa’s mission is easier for navigation and control, while Google Assistant is more for searching for shows and integrating into IoT devices. There is also IFTTT support for better home automation.
Expanding on the IFTTT integration, TiVo suggests that the service could be used to turn on a certain channel when users arrive home, pause what you’re watching when the doorbell rings, or even send a message when children try to unlock the DVR’s parental controls.
A future update will bring support for Alexa, Google Assistant, and IFTTT sometime over the next few months.
