The Consumer Electronics Show, or CES, is typically where we see companies release interesting products that others might not have thought of before or some that are just plain interesting. They both can be said for Toshiba’s new Symbio speaker, which combines Amazon’s Alexa, a security camera, intercom, smart-home hub that works with either Zigbee or Z-Wave, and sound detector all into one. To make everything easier, users can download the Toshiba Smart Home app to “control everything from lights and music to door locks and temperature settings, from any location – at home, at the office or out of town,” the company states.
As mentioned the Symbio includes an integrated 1080p wide-angle security camera. Toshiba did not mention if Alexa could control the security camera or other smart home hub features, but users should be able to most everything from the app. The camera will be able to provide motion-based alerts and stream live HD video to the user’s smartphone, as well.
The integrated microphone allows for two-way intercom communications, like what can be done between two Echo and Google Home devices. It also paves way for sound monitoring, so for example, if the Symbio detects a smoke alarm going off, it can send an alert to your smartphone via the app.
Toshiba has to yet to release any other information about the Symbio, such as the price and availability information. However, the company is displaying the device at this year’s CES event, so more details could come out then.
What do you think of the Symbio? It combines a lot of products into one package, which would be good for people who want to get Alexa features with a basic security camera. Stay tuned to TechDependent for more of our CES 2018 coverage, and click here to get caught up.
