Snapchat appears to be finessing Facebook’s current status in the news world today with it’s April Fools’ Day filter dedicated to the social networking giant. Users of the app may have noticed that exactly a year ago, an Instagram-style filter was in place, but this time it looks like Snapchat is going for Facebook’s jugular vein as the app introduced a Facebook-style filter aimed to display Russian bots liking your update. The filter, which is exclusive for today, is Snapchat’s April Fools’ intimation for 2018.
As you can see above, the filter features a user interface which is pretty much the same as Facebook’s, surrounding your picture with text in a Cyrillic script-like font – a blatant gesture towards Russia. One of the funnier aspects is that the filter highlights likes from “your mum” and “a bot.” This all looks like a motion in the “beef” between Snapchat and Facebook following the news of the 2016 US election being allegedly influenced by 50,000 bots on Facebook said to be linked with the government of Russia. Although the “your mum” like was used in the Instagram-style filter last year, this time it resembles the older user audience of Facebook.
In an attempt to swing at Instagram, Snap – the parent company of Snapchat – recently rolled-out a new appearance of its app. The company’s CEO Evan Spiegel indicated his annoyance of Facebook pick-pocketing Snapchat’s features recently. We’ve seen Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook launch camera features, discovery sections, stories, face filters, and cheekily, even messaging streaks – a quite obvious blow. Evan Spiegel had sent for Facebook in regards to the fake news issue that Facebook had and still is suffering from. This new filter just goes to show that the clash of the two social media giants is nowhere near over.
What do you think of the filter? Will Facebook respond?
